Margrethe Mather. Semi-Nude Male. c1925.

Margethe Mather, 1885-1952.

Possibly born as Emma Caroline Youngren, much is still unknown about Mather’s early life. She may have worked from a young age as a prostitute both Utah and San Francisco before moving to Los Angeles. As Margrethe Mather, she was an artist and a bohemian who introduced modernity into photography. A contemporary, lover and friend of Edward Western her critical eye influenced his work as much as his hers.

William “Billy” Justema was an artist, collaborator and friend of Margethe Mather. In this intimate detail of Justema’s torso, he wears his favourite kimono. Mather makes use of bold contours with patterned monochrome drapes that accent the smooth tautness of his skin.
